Sakhi's Laghukatha

Posted on: January 10, 2008

I was travelling by air the other day. It was very unusual for me to converse with a fellow passenger. But that day I was stranded for a long time on the airport due to bad weather and flights were quite delayed. After completing a novel I didn’t have anything to do and there was this sweet twenty something girl sitting besides me and she looked good enough to have conversation with. We started chatting and the conversation and time flew fast. It was pleasure talking to her. It was obvious that she was well read. I was enjoying her company.

Our conversation was interrupted by the security check announcement. We parted our ways. But as I saw her walking down the aisle, I was wondering, “Did I really understand her? Was it as easy as she made out to be? I never thought flesh trade as comparable to being a gynaecologist!”

One thing I realized about myself that day; am still a orthodox, conservative female.

And I like it that way.

Frankly speaking, I did not understand her. I didn’t like her any more..not that it would matter since she was virtually a stranger and our roads are never going to cross again. But I still didn’t like her. Some how she left a bad taste in my mouth.

She said, “It started as just a dare when I was in college. One thing led to other and today I am one of the most sought after escort . I don’t have to do this. But money is good and I do take care of…. you know what! I really don’t know why I am telling you all this. But some how I just thought that you might understand that this is just a profession like any other. Its like a male gynaecologist looking at his female patient. As it is part of his work, I do my work. I do feel sometimes that what will I do once I am not so attractive. But that I can worry about later.”

I was dumb founded. She looked so young, so…! Probably I heard or understood wrongly. What could have led this sweet girl to this trade. Then she slowly said something which I could not believe.

But then suddenly she said, “I am an escort!”

Conversation then turned to our professions. I mentioned my being in marketing and in turn asked about hers. A shadow came over her face but it was lifted immediately. She didn’t say anything for a while. I felt somehow I have trespassed.
